2 CD + DVD, Blue Rose Records
January 27th 2008: On their “Headlines” tour Hank Shizzoe & The Directors played a concert to an enthusiastic full capacity crowd at the Laboratorium in Stuttgart. The city is one of the main centres of the automobile industry and Germany’s equivalent to Detroit. Hence the title… The Directors are guitarist Oli Hartung, upright bass player extraordinaire Michel Poffet and drummer Christoph Beck. Together they have played more than 750 concerts and form what Americans call “a tight unit.”
The two hour set features songs from all of Hank’s previous albums with the focus mainly on newer material. Here we have a band that can do anything they damn please – from rolling rockers to quiet and intimate moments, it’s all here. Highlights include a moving tribute to Ali Farka Touré (“The Farmer’s Song”), exercises in hard driving lap steel playing (“Indian Girl”) and an eclectic choice of cover songs: John Fogerty’s “Green River”, Bob Dylan’s forgotten gem “Yea! Heavy And A Bottle Of Bread” and gospel rendition of Hank Williams’ “I Can’t Get You Off Of My Mind” blend in perfectly with Hank’s originals. The musicians were on a long leash and jammed as if there was no tomorrow.
You can enjoy the entire show (including a thunderous drum solo) on two CDs in fine sound quality and on a DVD. Nothing was fixed in the studio, it’s all 100% live and in colour. After the fabulous “Live In Concert” with Sonny Landreth (2003) “Live In Motown” is a brilliant addition to Hank Shizzoe’s discography and once more shows what a great band is capable of.
