Dear friends and music lovers from far and wide

It’s been a while since my last update. More than a year. A year that has passed quickly, an “annus horribilis”. We all know what’s been happening and continues to happen. As for me and my band, we got kind of lucky. Our last show of the “Steady As We Go” tour was played in March 2020, mere days before the european lockdown. We had decided in fall 2019 that we would not play summer festivals in 2020. Prior commitmenets of several musicians meant that we would not book any more dates during the rest of the year. We have always been a group with exceptional timing. In this case we were just plain lucky. Every band leader who plays with outstanding musicians knows that you have to plan well in advance. With Tom Etter, Simon Baumann and Michael Flury this is certainly the case. I am glad we didn’t have to postpone shows and tours again and again.

As for me I took some time off, started to write new material and was busy recording the score for a fabulous movie that will hopefully come out next year. Writing and recording scores for screen and stage is a great thing and also something that you can easily do during difficult times like these. As for my own stuff, I started work on my next album. It slowly keeps growing into quite a large project. The idea is to record the whole thing twice – one time with arrangements and other musicians and one time straight solo versions, field recording style, voice, guitar, one microphone, no mixing. The band album will be pressed on audiophile vinyl (2×10″). In the gatefold sleeves you will also find a CD version plus a second CD with the field recordings/solo versions. There might be some extra tracks on the CDs, we’ll see. The list of songs I want to record is already too long… The album hast the code working title 1MD. The recording process should be finished by spring 2021, fingers crossed.

The whole set (2LP+2CDs) will not be available to stream and there won’t be download versions. You will be able to listen to most of it right here on hankshizzoe.com. If you want to own it you can order through the new store section on this here website. Some choice record stores will carry it as well as some smaller online stores. No amazon etc., don’t like’em. As of yet it is unclear whether there will be hi-res audiophile download options. We will look at various options. More on that soon.

The new online shop will be up early summer 2021. In addition to the new records we will also ship some of the older albums and LPs as well as cool merch. We’re also contemplating the possibility of offering online 1:1 sessions. Would you like to learn something on guitar? Would you like to learn something about recording music or writing songs, or…? I don’t know yet but it might be a cool idea to offer something like that bundled with the new album. What do you think?

Liebe Freundinnen und Freunde des guten Tons von nah und fern

Mehr als ein Jahr ist vergangen seit meinem letzten Update. Ein Jahr, das rasend schnell vorbeizog, ein “annus horribilis”. Wir wissen alle, was geschehen ist und leider immer noch geschieht. Meine Band und ich hatten etwas Glück: Wir spielten unser letztes Konzert im Rahmen der “Steady As We Go” Tour im März 2020, wenige Tage vor dem Lockdown in Europa. Bereits im Herbst 2019 hatten wir uns entschieden, im Sommer 2020 keine Festivals zu buchen. Verschiedene Engagements einzelner Musiker machten auch klar, dass wir für den Rest des Jahres keine weiteren Konzerte buchen konnten. Wir waren schon immer mit gutem Timing gesegnet. In diesem Fall hatten wir einfach sehr viel Glück. Jeder Bandleader, der mit aussergewöhnlich guten Musikern spielt weiss, dass eine langfristige Planung essentiell ist. Mit Tom Etter, Simon Baumann und Michael Flury ist das so. Ich bin froh, dass wir nicht – wie so viele andere – Konzerte und Tourneen immer wieder verschieben und absagen mussten.

Ich habe mich seit dem Frühling ein paar anderen Tätigkeiten gewidmet, neue Songs geschrieben und einen Soundtrack für einen wunderbaren Spielfilm komponiert und aufgenommen. Der kommt hoffentlich irgendwann 2021 in die Kinos. Was meine eigene Musik betrifft, so habe ich damit begonnen, das nächste Album zu produzieren. Langsam aber sicher wird dieses Projekt immer grösser. Die Idee ist, das Ganze zweimal aufzunehmen – einmal mit vollen Bandarrangements und GastmusikerInnen und einmal in Soloversionen: Stimme, Gitarre, ein Mikrophon, richtige Field Recordings, kein Mix, 1:1. Das Bandalbum wird auf audiophiles Vinyl gepresst (2×10″). Im schönen Klappcover wird es dann auch Platz für eine CD-Version haben, dazu eine zweite CD mit den Solo Sessions. Könnte gut sein, dass auf den CD-Fassungen ein paar zusätzliche Tracks Platz finden… Die Liste der Songs, die ich gerne aufnehmen möchte, ist schon jetzt zu lange. Das Album hat einen Code-Arbeitstitel: 1MD. Die Aufnahmen sollten im Frühling 2021 im Kasten sein.

Das ganze Set (2LP+2CDs) wird nicht auf Streaming-Plattformen veröffentlicht und nicht als Download erhältlich sein. Hier auf hankshizzoe.com wird man einen Grossteil der Musik anhören können. Wer die Musik physisch besitzen möchte, wird das Set hier auf der Website im neuen Shop bestellen können. Ebenso werden gut sortierte Fachhändler und ein paar kleinere Onlinestores beliefert. Amazon und die anderen Multis hingegen nicht, weil ich die nicht mag. Gegenwärtig ist noch unklar, ob es die Option eines audiophilen Hi-Res-Downloads geben wird. Wir prüfen verschiedene Optionen. Mehr dazu bald hier.

Der neue Onlineshop wird im Frühsommer 2021 aufgeschaltet. Zusätzlich zur neuen Musik werden auch ältere Alben und LPs sowie neues Merch erhältlich sein. Wir überlegen uns auch, ob wir online 1:1-Sessions anbieten sollten. Möchtet Ihr etwas auf der Gitarre lernen? Oder über Songwriting, Studioarbeit, …? Ich weiss es noch nicht, aber vielleicht wäre es eine gute Idee, sowas als Paket mit dem neuen Album anzubieten. Was meint Ihr?

So, jetzt mal die Magnatones vorglühen und die Juptiter Stratotone abstauben. Time 4 Tone! Und vielleicht schaffe ich es ja irgendwann, ernsthaft Paul Franklins Pedal-Steel-Kurs zu beginnen. Zwei Abende in Berns Osten, zwei Besuche im Wilden Westen. Im Barocksaal der Villa Mettlen in Muri bei Bern begegnet Hank im November 2019 zwei seiner liebsten Autoren der Gegenwart. Am 23. 11. liest Alex Capus aus seiner wunderbaren Sammlung “Skidoo”. Am 24. 11. steht gar eine Welturaufführung an: Matto Kämpf liest sein neues Western-Epos “Köbi dr Killer”, live vertont von Hank an Gitarre und Banjo.

An beiden Abenden erklingen zudem Cowboysongs, Moritaten und Kuriositäten aus dem Wilden Westen, wo die Sehnsucht so gross ist wie der Himmel und die Prärie zusammen. Damit nicht genug: Vor dem Konzert kann man sich herrliches Chili (mit und ohne Fleisch) und ein gutes Getränk gönnen.
